My First Race of 2015! (Barlowe Bolt 5K Race Review)

Yesterday I ran my first race of 2015, my first race in 6 months, the Barlowe Bolt 5K! This is my second time running this race, you can see last year’s race review here….It felt great to stretch out my legs and a great confidence booster to push the pace a bit! I was able to maintain a respectable 7:45 pace, by far the fastest I’ve ran since before my injury, and even took 1st place overall female in this small community organized race! 🙂

We had an out of nowhere, first day of Spring, snow day on Friday so it was still uncomfortably cold at the 7 am race start time. Luckily they were offering free coffee for runners! I always appreciate free coffee! I also thought it was pretty cool that they now made the race stroller and dog friendly too! My friend’s Wiener dog, Rocket, ran a 35 minute race (with a poop break!!)…impressive for a guy with 1 inch legs! Next year they plan on advertising the race as dog friendly, which hopefully will attract more runners to the race.  This race is one of the biggest annual fundraisers for “Friends of Olde Mill” to build a new neighborhood playground. They’ve finally reach 20K of their 50K fundraising goal, and plan on breaking ground next month!

Not only did I run my first race of 2015 this week, I also ran my first long run of 2015 this week! Overall, I’d say this was a pretty good training week!! We had a few days with perfect weather, which gave me the chance to get off the treadmill and run outside! I’m looking forward to more running outside and more Spring races!

That time I DIDN’T run a marathon…..

For those who don’t remember, yesterday I was SUPPOSED to run the Wineglass Marathon and it was SUPPOSED to be my peak race for the year/BQ attempt.  I was SUPPOSED to follow Hanson’s training method.  Bottom line is, there were a lot of things that were SUPPOSED to happen that just didn’t.  Life, work, lots of excuses, and a major motivational funk…I gave up on the idea of running Wineglass just a month into my training and chose instead to spend what free time I had outside of work on shenanigans instead.  I tried to get a few runs in here and there, but if I’m being honest I wasn’t in the right mental state and I totally half assed my work-outs and took a few big backwards in terms of my fitness.

That being said, I think I made the right decision to NOT run yesterday (Deferred my entry for the 2015 WGM).  Still, it was a weird feeling waking up yesterday, looking at my clock and thinking about the fact that the race I was supposed to be running was going on at that very moment.  This was my first time backing out of a race; even if I don’t feel 100% prepared I usually will just say, “F*#@ it!”, change my strategy/goal for the day, and look at it as more racing experience under my belt.    So yesterday, I had a couple hours of mourning and silent reflection for the marathon I DIDN’T run.



I’m O.K. with it, I really am….in fact, I think it’s EXACTLY what I needed.  It fueled the fire under me again, and I am ready to get back into “beast” training mode.  I’ve been running consistently for the last month and building my base mileage back up, last week I ran 35 total miles and this week I’m ready to start pushing my weekly mileage back above 40.   I signed up for two half marathons next month to “shake out” my racing legs and regain some of my confidence.  (I do a lot of non-peak races just to keep race anxiety in check for the peak ones) I need to decide on a Spring marathon soon so I can start planning out my training.  A March race would mean I’d have to start another training plan around the end of this month.  I want a race with a fast/flat course somewhere on the East Coast in March or April.  I’m looking and asking around, and hopefully will make a decision in the next week or two.

7 random facts/things you may not know about Running Betty:

  1.  My middle name is Louise, the same middle name my mother has.  It’s a bit “old fashioned” so I got teased about it as a kid, but now I’m nothing but proud to share a middle name with my super awesome mom! 🙂
  2. I am terrified of spiders! Seriously, to the point that I can’t even step on one (I’m afraid I’ll miss and it will run up my pant leg) or even pick up a dead one with a paper towel wearing rubber dish gloves (Even squished I’m convinced the sneaky bastard is only PLAYING dead)!  Yes, I realized this is irrational and NO, I am not eve close to joking!
  3. I get VERY emotional when rocking the air guitar in my car.  I will sing at the top of my lungs and start tearing up; especially if it’s a Journey song!
  4. I love spicy food! If I’m eating something that isn’t spicy by default (Indian/Thai/Mexican) I will douse it in hot sauce!
  5. I grew up playing capture the flag and paint ball (all the time) with my 3 younger brothers.  I took it very seriously! I once hid in a tree for over an hour, waiting to drop a water balloon on my brothers head!
  6. Speaking of climbing trees….I have always loved climbing on things!  As a kid, this meant getting stitches more times than I can even count….As an adult it developed into a love for rock climbing! While the tiniest spider will have me standing on couch crying, I am pretty fearless when it comes to heights!
  7. Which is how I ended up being a diver my freshman year of high school! Dive meets equaled extra points for my schools swim meets.  Since we didn’t have a female diver at my school, and I was fearless/dumb,  the coach convinced me to dive.  I could land an 11 dive list, but let me tell you, it wasn’t pretty!  I was relieved to pass the torch to the new girl (a former gymnast) my sophomore year, and to be able to focus 100% on my swimming!

Wineglass Marathon Week 3 Training Recap:

  • Monday- 6 miles easy
  • Tuesday- Rest
  • Wednesday- 6 miles easy
  • Thursday- 1 mile, 8×600 meter repeats (2:33-2:36 pace) with 600 meter recovery(7 miles total)
  • Friday- 1 mile warm-up, 6 mile tempo run (7:49-8:01 pace), 1 mile cool-down (8 miles total)
  • Saturday- 5 miles easy, trail run
  • Sunday- 10 mile long (8:33 pace)
  • Total Weekly Miles- 42 miles 
  • Total 2014 Miles- 816.35 miles

I was happy with this weeks training.  It’s definitely easier to get my miles in when I’m home! I can stick to my routine and can run all of my favorite routes/trails.  Being back at sea level was cool too, my breathing was more natural and I was able to hit my goal pace in (almost) every work-out, aside from my track/speed workout which was far from perfect. I started too late on Thursday (Around 8 am), and it heated up quick!  My first 6 repeats felt great and were on pace, but I felt like I hit a wall before starting the last two.  ALL of my muscles were cramping, including my arms.  I was worried about heat exhaustion so I drank lots of water then ran my last two repeats way slower than goal pace (About 8-8:30 min per mile).

Today’s long run felt great!! When initially looking at my training plan, I was wondering what the difference was between a 10 mile easy run and a 10 mile long run…..Well the difference is pace!  (For those of you who remember when I first started rambling on about Hanson’s training method, one of the key principles of his training plan is to run at a “prescribed pace” for each workout.)  My 10 mile easy run was at a 9:30 min per mile pace, while today’s 10 miler was ran at a 8:33 min per mile pace.  While I am not 100% sold yet, and a bit nervous that following Hanson’s method is going to make me slower, not faster…after a few weeks of following this program my pacing is definitely improving.  I am starting to feel the difference between a 6:30, 7:00, 8:30, and so on…minute per mile pace and am able to maintain a more consistent overall pace during my workouts.  It took me 2 miles to warm-up, but I ran my last 8 miles at a steady 8:15 pace, making today’s run my most even paced long run to date! 🙂

I rewarded myself with one of my favorite post workout snacks; an almond butter and banana/berry protein shake….it was soo refreshing and a great way to cool down after today’s long run! 🙂 (Ingredients: 3/4 cup vanilla almond milk, 1 scoop vanilla protein powder, 1/2 frozen banana, 1/2 cup frozen mixed berries, 3 coconut water ice-cubes, 1 tablespoon almond butter)

Memorial Day Weekend and My Weekly Run Down

Happy Memorial day everyone!  I hope you all are enjoying your holiday weekend as much as I am, and that everyone remembers what we are celebrating.  Today we are honoring the men and women of the armed forces who sacrificed their lives for their country.  Danny and I drove by the Maryland Veteran’s cemetery on Saturday where people were visiting to place flowers on their loved one’s graves.  It was an incredibly reverent and humbling experience.  I can’t even imagine how many lives were changed by their sacrifice and for it I will always be grateful.




So what have I been up to this weekend?  I took Danny to the doctor after work on Friday because he has had a cold for almost 2 weeks! I started to notice a little tickle in the back of my throat and a teeny cough Saturday morning.  By Sunday I was knocked flat on my butt, and slept the day/night away.  I usually never get sick, but this has been a bad year for me.  I blame the crazy Maryland weather for my weakened immune system and Danny’s frequent work trips for transforming him to a walking incubator for a broad collection of regionally dispersed super germs.  I did manage to have some fun before, during, and after contracting the “Snotty Dirty Southern Whooping Cough”.  Totally a real thing…just check out WebMD! 😉

  • I got some great workouts in! Including a track work-out,  a run through the park, a sweaty yoga session, and even a little cross training with my TRX straps!

  •  Attended a long time friend’s beautiful outdoor wedding!  I’ve known Carrie* since tech school in 2003; then we both ended up assigned to the same squadron after training.  On Saturday she married one of the coolest chicks I’ve ever met, Laura*.  They go together like peanut butter and jelly! And it made me so happy seeing society is slowly coming around; Gay Marriage is actually now legal in the state of Maryland!  Woot Woot! 🙂

  • Became Addicted to “The Game of Thrones”.  When laid up in bed sick on Saturday I watched three back to back episodes with Danny.  I’ve heard people talking about it at work, but I usually have a difficult time holding still and watch very little T.V.  But Game of Thrones is seriously awesome!  I am kicking myself for being such a “non-conformist” and not watching this show sooner!!

Another Week of Training

Last week’s training went much better than the week before! I got 5 runs done including running the Warrior Dash with friends, all though one of those runs ended up shorter than planned due to being wiped out after a late night in the office.   This was my 3rd time running the Warrior Dash, and it was fun as always! I’ll be posting a race review later this week! 🙂

Not a perfect training week, but I’m getting there! I am having to learn to be patient and realistic with myself, and work has been especially hectic this month.  I’m both excited and nervous about my upcoming NFC trail marathon.  It is not a goal race for me, so I plan on just taking it easy and enjoying the scenery.  I’ve done a couple of short trail runs and am quickly learning that trail running is a totally different beast! While I can’t run ANY where near my normal pace, I love the challenge, the focus it requires, and the feeling of adventure.  We’ll see how NFC goes…I’m expecting I may get hooked! (I do have an addictive running personality after all 😉 )
